Hydro Green Energy to get federal funding for technology advancement

EBR Staff Writer Published 09 September 2011

Renewable energy firm Hydro Green Energy (HGE) has been selected to receive $1.8m from the US Department of Energy (DOE) for advanced research, development and deployment of its low-head hydropower turbine and modular hydropower system.

The DOE grants will help the company complete the design of its advanced, second generation hydropower turbine and assist in the deployment of its next hydropower facility.

HGE holds permits for the development of 280MW of new hydropower capacity at 28 sites in 13 US states.

The company said that its current projects will avoid 2.2 billion pounds of carbon emissions annually and generate enough energy to power about 161,000 homes per year.

HGE has also permits processing on another 250MW of capacity, and the company initiated a process in August to get operating licenses from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for seven hydropower projects in the Midwest Independent System Operator service territory.
