SAL - Full-Service Heavy Lift Shipping

SAL operates one of the most modern fleets of heavy lift vessels currently in the market. Its wide ranging experience makes SAL the partner of choice for the safe delivery of all types of project cargoes.

Cargo portfolio

Over the past 30 years, SAL has developed an extensive portfolio of international clients who rely on its services. Amongst the companies who seek out the expertise of SAL are some of the most renowned actors in the project market. A common feature of all SAL's clients is the high value of their cargo that needs to be transported in a safe and time-sensitive manner. Thus, conscientious care and handling of the cargo is of utmost importance. Amongst the wide variety of cargo transported by SAL a number of key areas have emerged which include energy (wind energy, power plants, oil and gas), cranes, heavy machinery, floating cargo and offshore equipment (oil and gas).

16 high speed heavy lift vessels

Equipped with on-board cranes and cargo-handling equipment, all vessels are designed to visit both remote ports and oil fields around the world. With their modern gear, the vessels can operate as heavy-lift installation vessels (HLIV) and platform transportation vessels (PTVs).

With a speed of 20 knots, the vessels of SAL are able to offer extremely short transit times which is imperative for time-sensitive cargo. Equipped with a combined crane capacity of up to 2,000 mtons safe working load (SWL), the vessels are able to load a variety of oversized project cargoes including pipe lay towers, reels, buoys, drilling sections, jackets and modular structures. The new buildings are equipped with the Dynamic Positioning System, which gives the vessels the ability to perform complex offshore installations.

Latest ship buildings - Type 183 with DP

SAL decided to further invest in innovative new buildings and put the MV "Svenja" and the MV "Lone" in service. The sister vessels of Type 183 are the largest and most modern heavy lift ships in the world.

These vessels maintain the unrivalled speed of 20 knots and are equipped with two cranes of 1,000 mtons SWL each. The unprecedented lifting capacity of combined 2,000 mtons SWL, their crane outreach of 38 m as well as their ability to trade with an open hatch make these vessels an important asset in the heavy lift market.

To meet the growing complexity of offshore projects, including the oil and gas sector, the MV "Svenja" (DP1) and MV "Lone" (DP2) are equipped with the dynamic positioning system (DP). Dynamic Positioning (DP) is the automatic control of the vessel in its three axes of freedom (surge, sway and yaw).

Company profile

In 1980, the modern SAL office was founded by Hans Heinrich. In 1984, the first geared vessel with 2 x 30 mtons SWL was ordered. Only 25 years later, the new buildings of Type 183 feature cranes with up to 1,000 mtons SWL each. In April 2007, SAL with its shareholders Hans Heinrich, Claus Heinrich and Lars Rolner entered a joint venture with the "K" Line Group headed by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisa, Ltd.

After four years of fruitful partnership, "K" Line purchased the remaining 50 percent of SAL in June 2011 and with that became a 100 % shareholder of the company. Amongst the wide array of synergies between the two companies with their long histories is the establishment of an extensive global network of sales offices.

World wide cargo handling and transportation

The company's main office is located in Steinkirchen just outside of Hamburg, Germany. In addition, SAL has developed an extensive international network of subsidiary offices in Japan, China, UK, Italy, Finland, France, Singapore, USA, the Netherlands, Russia and Australia. This worldwide network of sales offices and agents ensures the efficiency of local cargo handling. Today the company has a staff of about 100 ashore and 600 crew members on board the vessels.
